BEING PRESENT

0/1: ORIENTATION

05/11/2026 Session Notes

KEY MESSAGE

Leadership starts from within. Our thoughts, emotions and physical states influence our decisions and actions. Our behaviours, in turn, shape our experiences, relationships and the world around us.

01 — LEADERSHIP & SELF-AWARENESS

  • Leadership involves mindsets and behaviours that can be developed.

  • Self-awareness: recognising our thoughts, emotions and reactions.

  • Personal values and their influence on our decisions.

  • The difference between our intentions and our impact on others.

  • The kind of person and leader we want to become.

02 — THE MIND–BODY CONNECTION

  • Mind–body connection: The two-way relationship between our mental and physical states.

  • Stress response: How our bodies respond to perceived physical, psychological and social threats.

  • Self-regulation: Recognising physical signals and practising techniques that can help regulate our responses to stress.

  • Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to adapt through learning, experience and practice.

03 — WHAT SHAPES OUR BEHAVIOUR

  • Personal values, beliefs and experiences.

  • The influence of relationships and our social environment.

  • Fear, self-doubt and habitual patterns.

  • Our capacity to develop new behaviours through awareness and practice.

Key takeaway:

Awareness creates the opportunity to respond more consciously rather than react automatically.

REFLECTION & PRACTICE

01 — WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY?

Anger and frustration can offer clues about our personal values.

Identify three situations or behaviours that consistently provoke a strong reaction.

For each, consider:

  • What specifically triggers my reaction?

  • Why does it matter to me?

  • Which personal value might be challenged?

02 — LEADERSHIP REFLECTION

Think of a leader you admire and one whose leadership you found difficult.

  • What qualities distinguish them?

  • Which qualities do I recognise in myself?

  • What kind of leader do I want to be?

03 — OBSERVE YOUR REACTIONS

During the coming week, notice a moment of stress or frustration.

  • What am I thinking?

  • What is happening in my body?

  • What is my immediate reaction?

  • How could I choose to respond?
